In this book, I present an English translation of a collection of fatwas and scholarly responses attributed to the renowned Shāfiʿī scholar and jurist, Imam Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī (631-676 AH / 1233-1277 CE).
The collection covers a wide range of subjects, including purification, prayer, fasting, charity, marriage, transactions, Islamic manners, spiritual refinement, and other matters of Islamic law and religious practice. These questions and answers provide readers with valuable insight into Imam al-Nawawī's scholarship, legal reasoning, and approach to the various religious questions presented to him.
I would like to clarify an important point concerning the nature of this work. This book was not written or compiled by Imam al-Nawawī himself as a single, organized book. Rather, it is a collection of his fatwas and responses to various questions, which were subsequently gathered and arranged by his student, Shaykh ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn Ibn al-ʿAṭṭār (654-724 AH / 1256-1324 CE). Ibn al-ʿAṭṭār was one of Imam al-Nawawī's prominent students and is also well known for his writings about his teacher. Thus, while the fatwas are attributed to Imam al-Nawawī, the arrangement and compilation of this collection are attributed to his student Ibn al-ʿAṭṭār.
I have sought to convey the meaning of the Arabic text faithfully while presenting it in clear and readable English. Where appropriate, I have preserved the structure and terminology of the original text so that the translation remains as close as possible to its Arabic source.
My purpose in translating this work is to make these valuable scholarly responses of Imam al-Nawawī accessible to English-speaking readers and to enable those who cannot read Arabic to benefit from his knowledge and scholarship.

Renowned for his piety, sincerity, vast knowledge, and devotion to the Qur'an and Sunnah, he earned universal respect among Muslim scholars and remains one of the most widely read authors in the Islamic world.
Although he passed away at the age of only forty-five, Imam al-Nawawi left behind an extraordinary scholarly legacy. His works have been studied continuously for more than seven centuries in mosques, universities, and Islamic seminaries across the world. Books such as Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn, Al-Arbaʿīn al-Nawawiyyah (The Forty Hadith), Al-Adhkār, and his commentary on Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim continue to be among the most frequently published, translated, and taught classical Islamic works.
Muslims from every corner of the world have benefited from his writings, regardless of their legal school or cultural background. His books are distinguished by their clarity, authenticity, practical guidance, and careful reliance on the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah. For this reason, Imam al-Nawawi's works remain essential references for students of knowledge, scholars, and ordinary Muslims alike.

- Tuḥfat al-Ṭālibīn fī Tarjamat al-Imām al-Nawawī by his devoted student, ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn Ibn al-ʿAṭṭār. This is the earliest and most authoritative biography, written by someone who personally knew Imam al-Nawawi.
- Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ by al-Dhahabī.
- Ṭabaqāt al-Shāfiʿiyyah al-Kubrā by Tāj al-Dīn al-Subkī.
