Father McShane of Maryknoll: Missioner in South China is a biographical account of the life and work of Father James McShane, an American Catholic priest who served as a missionary in China during the early 20th century. The book, written by James Edward Walsh, offers a detailed and engaging narrative of McShane's journey from his early years in New York City to his arrival in China as a member of the Maryknoll Missionary Society. Through vivid descriptions and personal anecdotes, Walsh paints a picture of McShane as a deeply committed and compassionate individual, dedicated to improving the lives of the Chinese people he served. McShane's work in China ranged from building schools and hospitals to ministering to the spiritual needs of his parishioners. He was also a vocal advocate for social justice, speaking out against the injustices and inequalities he witnessed in Chinese society. The book provides a fascinating glimpse into the challenges and rewards of missionary work in a foreign land, as well as the complex cultural and political dynamics of early 20th century China. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of Father McShane and his fellow Maryknoll missionaries, who continue to serve communities in need around the world. Overall, Father McShane of Maryknoll: Missioner in South China is a compelling and inspiring read for anyone interested in the history of Catholic missions or the broader history of China and its people. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
