One girl. One boy. One secret. One unstoppable ascent.
Wimborne, Dorset, 1905.
Eighteen-year-old Ella Holt knows exactly where society believes she belongs.
Below stairs.
When she enters service at magnificent Farleigh Hall, Ella is expected to work hard, keep her eyes lowered and remember her place. But Ella has never intended to remain a servant forever. Intelligent, ambitious and determined to make something of her life, she quickly discovers that behind the Hall's imposing doors, those born to privilege are guarding secrets far more dangerous than anything whispered below stairs.
At the heart of the Farleigh dynasty is a family beginning to fracture.
The marriage of Alistair and Amelia Farleigh is disintegrating. Amelia is slipping further into despair while her husband is drawn dangerously close to another woman. Their eldest son, Reginald, is expected to secure the family legacy through a suitable marriage, yet his reckless behaviour threatens the lives of those with far less power than himself.
And then there is Edward Farleigh.
The younger son.
The one man Ella must never allow herself to love.
What begins with stolen glances becomes an illicit romance that crosses one of Edwardian England's most rigid boundaries. Edward sees in Ella something others do not: not a servant girl, but the woman she is determined to become. Yet every secret meeting places Ella's livelihood, reputation and future in jeopardy.
Because at Farleigh Hall, love has consequences.
And Ella is beginning to uncover something even more unsettling.
Her connection to the Farleigh family may have begun long before she ever crossed the threshold to the servants' entrance.
As marriages are arranged, affairs concealed, loyalties tested and old secrets begin to surface, the glittering world of Farleigh Hall starts to crack. Upstairs and downstairs, women discover the price of loving Farleigh men-and Ella must decide whether Edward is worth risking everything for.
But Ella Holt was never destined to remain below stairs.
This is only the beginning of her ascent.
Farleigh Hall is the sweeping first instalment in The Farleigh Hall Saga-an addictive Edwardian family saga of forbidden love, ambition, class, betrayal and the secrets that bind one Dorset dynasty across generations.
