What do people say when they think no one is listening?
Yusuf Hasan has been driving the streets of London for twenty-three years. Eight hundred thousand miles. Thousands of fares. And in all that time, he has discovered one thing that never changes: people forget the rearview mirror.
They turn to the window. Their faces go unguarded. And they say the true thing they cannot say anywhere else.
In The Fare, Yusuf looks back on seventeen journeys that changed him - a widow who visited her husband's grave every Wednesday for four years, a bride who walked out of her own wedding in the rain, two estranged brothers sharing a cab to their dying father's bedside, a seven-year-old who asked thirty-one questions on the way to school, and a construction worker whose wife sent sandwiches as a thank-you for showing up on time, every morning, for eight months.
Each fare taught him something. About grief. About courage. About forgiveness, and the weight of carrying an old grievance, and what ordinary decency actually looks like when no one is watching.
There is only one problem.
For twenty-three years, Yusuf has been dispensing wisdom he was not applying to himself.
The Fare is a warm, funny, and quietly devastating book about the gap between knowing something and actually living it - and the phone call to a brother in Canada that was twenty years too late and exactly on time.
It is considerably easier to be wise on behalf of other people than on behalf of yourself.
Perfect for fans of Fredrik Backman, Matt Haig, and A Man Called Ove.
