The Fall of Jeremiah Grant: An Irish Tragedy in Five Acts

In the shadowed heart of 19th-century Maryborough-modern-day Portlaoise-where the gallows cast their long, patient silhouettes and justice carries the weight of grief, unfolds the story of a man too stubborn to kneel and too proud to run.

The Fall of Jeremiah Grant is a sweeping, stage-bound tragedy rooted in the dark loam of Irish history, myth, and moral ambiguity. Spanning five acts and a chorus of unforgettable characters, Martin Smallridge (pen name of poet and playwright Marcin Malek) resurrects a tale both intimate and national-a meditation on loyalty, ruin, and the slow devouring hunger of consequence.

Born of modest fortune and bound by kin, Jeremiah's descent from local hero to hunted outlaw is told in sculpted scenes and lyrical dialogue. Each act threads its way through a life unraveling-from prosperous beginnings to outlaw concealment, courtroom reckonings, and a final defiant reckoning beneath the noose. The people around him-his grieving sister, the desperate townsfolk, the corrupt officials-aren't merely witnesses to his fall, but co-authors of his fate.

Set against a backdrop of economic turmoil and creeping colonial decay, the play moves with the cadence of old ballads and courtly lament, yet speaks in a voice disturbingly modern. It is a work rich in atmosphere, memory, and silence-where every spoken word seems to echo from a deeper place.

Included is a detailed staging guide, making this edition a practical compass for directors, designers, and actors seeking to bring this Irish tragedy to life on stage. For readers of literary drama, lovers of historical narratives, and those drawn to the moral echoes of the past, The Fall of Jeremiah Grant stands as a powerful tribute to the lives history nearly forgot.

Let the curtain rise. The gallows await.
