Before the great schoolmen, before the universities, a monk on the bank of a Norman river knelt down and tried to think his way toward the God he already loved. Saint Anselm of Canterbury - monk, abbot, archbishop, and Doctor of the Church - gave Christian thought a phrase it has never surrendered: faith seeking understanding. Fides quaerens intellectum. He did not reason his way to God and then kneel; he knelt, and out of prayer the reasons came.
Faith Seeking Understanding gathers Anselm's own prayers and meditations - in the faithful public-domain English of 1872 - into a fourteen-day retreat. Each day sets a theme of the interior life beside the saint's own words, a passage of Sacred Scripture, a space to dwell, and a prayer. The reader is carried from being made for God, through the compassion of Christ and the mystery of the Incarnation, to the royal way of the Cross and the blessed vision of God.
This edition includes:
- Anselm's prayers and meditations, arranged as a fourteen-day retreat
- For each day: a theme, the saint's own words, Sacred Scripture (Douay-Rheims), a place to dwell, and a prayer
- A closing Treasury of the Prayers of St. Anselm and a fourteen-part journal
