The distinction between the words of and in may seem minor in everyday English, yet within the Greek New Testament it carries profound theological weight-especially concerning the believer's justification before God. This book explores that distinction in depth, examining its grammatical, historical, theological, and pastoral implications.
In seven key passages across Paul's epistles, the King James Version preserves the phrase faith of Christ (or similar expressions such as faith of Jesus Christ and faith of the Son of God), reflecting the Greek construction pistis Christou. Historically, translators such as Tyndale, Luther, and Jerome understood this as a subjective genitive, referring to Christ's own faithfulness-His perfect obedience to the Father and fulfillment of the work of redemption.
However, beginning in the mid-twentieth century, most modern English translations-including the NIV, ESV, NASB, and NLT-shifted to rendering the phrase as faith in Christ, interpreting it as an objective genitive, meaning the believer's act of trusting in Christ. While this change appears subtle, the theological implications are significant.
This book argues that the KJV's rendering is not only grammatically sound but also theologically richer. It contends that Paul's teaching emphasizes not merely the believer's faith, but the faithfulness of Christ Himself as the true foundation of justification. For example, Galatians 2:16 presents justification as grounded in the faith of Jesus Christ, while Galatians 2:20 describes the Christian life as sustained by the faith of the Son of God. Similarly, Ephesians 3:12 locates boldness and access to God in Christ's faithfulness rather than human spiritual performance.
The book unfolds in three parts. The first examines each of the seven passages in context, comparing the KJV with modern translations to highlight what is gained or lost. The second traces the historical development of the translation debate, explores Old Testament foundations of divine faithfulness, and examines Christ's active obedience throughout His earthly ministry. The third provides an annotated reference of the passages and applies the findings to contemporary issues such as assurance, urging a recovery of the KJV's rendering in teaching and devotion.
While respecting modern translations, the book maintains that they often sacrifice theological depth for readability. Ultimately, it presents the faith of Christ as central to Paul's gospel: the perfect, completed faithfulness of the Son of God, which secures justification, sustains the believer's life, and guarantees final righteousness. The reader is invited not merely to understand this truth, but to rest in it and live by it.
