Exhume These Songs is a large collection of lyrical poetry. Its various themes include hopeful journeys, lovely attraction, maddening frenzy, saddening misery, and incomprehensible loss. Five parts separate each theme and tone of mood. This collection offers a wide range of genres and styles, containing traditional songwriting, modern hymns, pub songs, love songs, eulogies, and more. Every piece tells a peculiar story. Inspired by Irish literature and music, many songs pay tribute to authors like Joyce, Wilde, or Yeats. A lot of historical figures find themselves alongside mythical creatures. Notable characters include Aleister Crowley, Vlad the Impaler, Gráinne Ní Mháille, the Titanic, Cupid, the first werewolf, and elves as well as ghosts.

By means of metre and rhythm these lyrics invite interpretations of notes and melody. Some pieces dictate their inherent music, others are open for variations. A few songs are carefully rewritten traditional songs such as Twisted Rope (based on Casadh an tSúgáin), The Lass and the Lord (originally The Lass of Aughrim), or Spare Teacher (which is to be sung with the melody of Wild Rover). Combining traditional singing with modern lyrical writing, Exhume These Songs goes its own way with new contemporary story-telling in literature and music.
