Exception To The Rule

In the moving and delightful novel, Exception to the Rule, author Bobby Trufant explores the flawed facets of American attitudes toward African-Americans, and particularly toward African-American youth. The Washington family is close-knit, headed by fire fighter Bobby and the wise Vivianna, parents devoted to their children's welfare, happiness, and future. When Bobby dies in a heroic effort to save a child, Vivianna must lead her children toward the future dreamed for them. This dream is shattered when Kwamina, her teenage son, is falsely accused of mugging and killing an elderly woman. As word spreads and the media frenzy begins, segments of the population reveal the deeply held racism that runs like hot coals through society. With an intensity that moves the reader to laugh aloud and shed tears, Trufant delivers a work of fiction that can be shared by adults and children alike. This family may live in New York City, but their story is repeated daily throughout the country.
