All Ben Harris wants is to feel normal. Last summer, he and his friends faced off against a vampire, resulting in the murder of his father and causing his friend, Greg, to leave town unexpectedly. He's finally shaking off the cloak of grief and settling into his freshman year at Bristol High School when Randy Peterson goes missing. Is the nightmare starting again?

As Ben, Jack, and Richie search for answers they find no shortage of suspects. The owner of the new arcade, Buster, was one of the last people to see Randy before he disappeared. A few days earlier, Randy had a confrontation with a new neighbor, Bristol High's recently hired maintenance man. Randy's own father neglected to pick him up on the night he went missing, then moved out of town. Or is it something worse in Bristol?

When the boys discover a string of gruesome murders in nearby towns, they know the darkness has returned. Then Greg appears with ominous news.
