What modern man understands about Enoch can be condensed into a single sentence:
Enoch walked with God, and then was gone; for God took him away.
Enoch's role was far more important to ancient post-flood history than most understand. There are a handful of ancient books purporting to be the writings of Enoch. They are a disappointing mis-mash of sacred fact and irreverential fiction. Some of these apocryphal writings have recently been rediscovered and are being preached from secular-christian pulpits with disastrous effects.
We are also going to discover before we are through, that Enoch is vastly more important to understanding the universality of sacred doctrine, be it holy, pagan, or restored than most people imagine. None of these insights would have been possible without the restoration of sacred truths through the Prophet Joseph Smith.
Thanks to Brother Joseph, We know a great deal more about Enoch from early Latter-day Saint teachings than anywhere else. It very quickly becomes apparent that Enoch is important and in ways we are only beginning to understand.
