As the pinnacle of English poetry, In Memoriam is top rich in language, vivid in conception and beautiful in rhythm. It is difficult to describe and even to translate into other language. The poet has to express an unknown and very abstract spiritual world, and even Britain's poet Laureate himself has a hard time expressing his despair and frustration in the way he wants to, let alone in Chinese language. Tennyson, of course, was a master of the English language, and it is amazing how well he rhymes in all 2,900 lines. But the rhythm that forms the unique beauty of poetry is a pity that translation cannot achieve. Therefore, translator did not pursue the beauty of this rhythm in the process of translation. Just like the translation of ancient Chinese poetry into English, the English translation cannot achieve the metrical beauty of the original poem in any way. The translator can only adhere to the principle of literal translation, instead of using free translation or elegant translation, because free translation or elegant translation will change the meaning of the original poem, and the translated works are no longer the works of the original author but the translator's own works. A free translation or an elegant translation is like a plate of sweet and sour fish. It may be sweet but it has lost its original flavor. However, literal translation is not a mechanical conversion, but the corresponding translation in accordance with respective grammatical features of Chinese and English, so as to achieve accuracy and beauty. Only accuracy can achieve aesthetic sense because beauty is originally contained in the original poem, and only accurate literal translation can maintain the artistic conception of the original poem, because beauty is not come out by translation, but inherent in the work itself, and clever free translation or elegant translation can only destroy the aesthetic sense of the original and distort the original meaning.
