El inmigrante es una novela conmovedora, realista y profundamente crÃtica; alejada, al menos en lo posible, de subjetividad y prejuicios, para narrar acontecimientos vividos en comunismo en Cuba. Pero más allá de la esfera polÃtica y social, esta novela cuenta cómo el plan de Dios, para la vida de David, su protagonista, se va gestando a pesar de la decepción, la humillación y el encierro. Esta tampoco es una novela teológica, pero sà una prueba, a modo de relato, del plan divino para cada persona, que encomienda su camino a Cristo.
La historia surge de una chispa, un atrevimiento de escapar del sistema polÃtico de Cuba, lo cual resulta en dos intentos fallido y frustrados por abandonar La Isla, teniendo como consecuencia el encarcelamiento, la humillación y la desesperanza. No obstante, a pesar del dolor, Dios va abriendo caminos, que requieren de obediencia, perdón y paciencia, para finalmente alcanzar la ansiada libertad en los Estados Unidos y cumplir con ese plan divino y perfecto previamente trazado por Dios.
A pesar de la retórica polÃtica y sus contradicciones, y las presiones constantes del entorno social, David se mantuvo aferrado a su deseo de huir y rehacer su vida, lejos del comunismo. A pesar de los golpes y humillaciones que vivió desde pequeño, como si estuviesen marcando para este libro, hubo dos pilares fundamentales que nunca le pudieron arrebatar y lo llevaron a alcanzar la libertad, su fe, tardÃa, pero determinante en Cristo, y su dignidad.
