The Exiles of Florida is a historical account of the Maroons, a group of escaped slaves who fled from South Carolina and other slave states to find refuge in Florida. Written by Joshua R. Giddings, a former US Congressman and abolitionist, the book details the crimes committed by the US government against the Maroons, including forced removals, violence, and exploitation.Giddings describes the Maroons' struggle for freedom and their efforts to build a community in the swamps and forests of Florida. He also documents the government's attempts to suppress their rebellion, including military campaigns and the use of bloodhounds to track them down. The book highlights the hypocrisy of a government that claimed to uphold the principles of freedom and democracy while denying basic human rights to a large segment of its population. It also sheds light on a little-known chapter in the history of the American South and the struggle for racial justice.Overall, The Exiles of Florida is a powerful and insightful account of the Maroons' struggle for freedom and the injustices they faced at the hands of the US government. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of slavery, abolitionism, and the fight for civil rights in America. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
