Drawing on primary documents, intelligence reports, and accounts from those who survived the final compound battles, historian Winston Maddox reconstructs the fateful night of June 10, 1997. Trapped in his shrinking stronghold of Anlong Veng, Brother Number One-Pol Pot-convinced himself that his lifelong Defense Minister, Son Sen, was engineering a massive surrender to Prime Minister Hun Sen's government forces. Pol Pot's response was swift and absolute: an ambush by his elite bodyguards that resulted in the execution of Son Sen, his wife Yun Yat, and eleven of their family members, their bodies crushed beneath heavy military trucks to ensure total destruction.
What Pol Pot calculated as an act of terrifying control proved to be his ultimate undoing. The murder of the regime's military chief sent shockwaves through the remaining ranks. Realizing no officer was safe from the dictator's terminal paranoia, military chief Ta Mok-known as The Butcher-turned his veteran forces against his master. Within weeks, Pol Pot was fleeing through dense jungle on a stretcher, hunted by his own men, captured, and subjected to a dramatic jungle show trial before dying under house arrest on a pile of burning trash and rubber tires.
