An Examination Of The Witnesses, And Their Evidence, Given Before A Royal Commission Upon The Administration And Operation Of The Contagious Acts, 1871 is a book written by Francis Close in 1872. The book is an analysis of the testimony given by witnesses before a Royal Commission that was established to investigate the administration and operation of the Contagious Diseases Acts of 1871. These Acts were controversial laws that allowed for the forced medical examination and treatment of women suspected of being prostitutes in certain areas of England. Close's book provides an in-depth examination of the evidence presented by witnesses who were both for and against the Contagious Diseases Acts. He analyzes the arguments made by each witness and evaluates the credibility of their testimony. Close also provides his own opinions on the effectiveness and morality of the Contagious Diseases Acts. Overall, An Examination Of The Witnesses, And Their Evidence, Given Before A Royal Commission Upon The Administration And Operation Of The Contagious Acts, 1871 is a detailed and insightful analysis of a controversial moment in English history. It provides valuable insight into the debates surrounding the Contagious Diseases Acts and their impact on society, particularly women. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
