The Evolving Bible - Volume II: The New Testament continues the investigation begun in Volume I and turns to the textual and compositional history of the Christian Scriptures.
Across 63 detailed case studies, Ángel Duarte Martínez examines disputed passages in the Gospels, Acts, the Pauline Letters, the General Epistles, and Revelation. The book distinguishes carefully between genuine textual additions, scribal expansions, harmonizations, liturgical developments, editorial growth, compositional layering, and passages for which an interpolation hypothesis cannot be sustained.
Among the major cases explored are the Longer Ending of Mark, the Pericope Adulterae, Luke 22:43-44, Matthew 6:13, Acts 8:37, Romans 16:24, 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, 1 John 5:7-8, Jude's use of Enochic tradition, and a series of disputed passages in Revelation.
Drawing on Greek manuscripts, early papyri, Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Vaticanus, ancient versions, patristic testimony, linguistic evidence, literary structure, textual criticism, and reception history, the study evaluates each passage according to the strength of the surviving evidence.
The goal is not to sensationalize textual variation or to undermine Scripture. It is to read the New Testament with historical precision and intellectual honesty. Some cases provide strong evidence of secondary expansion; others reveal that traditional interpolation theories are weaker than they first appear.
