This book began with a question that would not leave me alone: what is the one thread that runs unbroken from the first living cell to the person reading this sentence? Not intelligence intelligence is recent, and rare. Not language, not culture, not tools. Those are late arrivals, ornaments on a structure that was already standing. The thread I kept returning to was something far older and far simpler. Every living thing, without exception, wants. A bacterium swimming up a gradient of sugar wants. A seedling bending toward a window wants. A crow working a puzzle wants. You, holding this book, want. The vocabulary changes; the grammar does not. What follows is an attempt to trace that grammar across four billion years from the first cell's blind urge to persist, through the opening of the eye, the crawl onto land, the kindling of intelligence, the rise of civilisation, and out toward whatever we are becoming next. It is not a textbook. It is a meditation with evidence in its pockets. I have tried throughout to resist the comfortable story the one where evolution is a ladder and we are standing on the top rung. Evolution has no rungs and no top. What it has is a single, relentless, branching pressure: the pressure of wanting, applied over unimaginable time. We are not the purpose of that process. We are one of its more talkative results. If the book has an argument, it is this: desire is not a flaw in the machinery of life. Desire is the machinery. Understanding this changes what we owe the future.
