She prices what the dead leave behind.
He needs one thing out of his grandmother's house and won't say what.
By the time they find it, she has already put it in the catalogue.
Nell Aguirre owns eleven things. She can list them. She does list them, at parties, as a bit, and the bit kills, because nobody has ever noticed she only counts to ten.
Nell empties dead people's houses for a living. Nineteen days to catalogue, price and sell an entire life on a bluff over the Hudson. She is very good at it. She got good at it for reasons she does not discuss.
Theo Kasprzak has been looking for something in that house since the morning of the funeral. He sits on the closet floor with a flashlight and puts the lids back on the boxes when he is done, and when Nell threatens to have him removed, he tells her to go ahead. She should. Instead she puts him on the crew.
For nineteen days they empty nine rooms together, and somewhere in the middle of it the job stops being the job. Then they find the thing he came for, jammed in the dark behind a water heater, worth about ten dollars. Nell already knows what it is going to cost him, because everything in that house goes in the catalogue. That is the rule she is bonded to. It is the only thing holding her together, and it is about to take the last piece of his mother he has left.
Everything Must Go is a slow-burn contemporary romance featuring:
- Forced proximity on a nineteen-day clock
- A guarded, funny heroine and a patient, deadpan hero
- He falls first, and he says so out loud
- Found letters, and one that was written but never sent
- Small-town Hudson Valley in October
- Open door, and a happily ever after that costs both of them something
A complete standalone. No cliffhanger.
