Ever the Sky is a poetry chapbook that explores the delicate balance between the vast cosmos and the intimate moments that define our lives. Ada Pendill weaves together themes of love, loss, wonder, and belonging with language that is both accessible and profound.
These poems invite readers to look up at the stars while keeping their feet firmly planted on the ground. From quantum entanglement to the simple song of a bird outside the window, Pendill finds poetry in both the enormous and the everyday. Her work celebrates the connections that bind us-to each other, to nature, and to the universe itself.
The collection opens with Ever More Stars, a love poem that spans cosmic time, comparing human connection to galaxies intertwined and electrons in orbit. This sets the tone for a journey through poems that are unafraid to ask big questions while maintaining an intimate, conversational voice. Whether contemplating the weight of the Earth, the inevitability of horizons, or the imperfect beauty of a hand-stitched heart, Pendill's observations feel both personal and universal.
Nature serves as both subject and metaphor throughout the collection. Birds sing defiantly in morning rain, trees cling to their green leaves until winter steals them away, and the ocean teaches lessons through unexpected waves. These aren't merely pretty images-they're meditations on resilience, change, and the passage of time.
The chapbook also explores relationships with tenderness and honesty. Poems like Shipwreck Sunrise and Horizonized capture the vulnerability of love and the courage it takes to begin again. My Mother's Song offers a poignant reflection on memory and legacy, centered around a box of charm bracelets and ticket stubs-small objects that contain entire worlds.
Pendill doesn't shy away from difficult subjects. Mental health, therapy, grief, and existential anxiety appear throughout the collection, handled with sensitivity and without sentimentality. In Sunshine Ghosts, a drive past graveyards and memorial shrines leads to a therapy appointment, while No Further Than Bones explores how our deepest feelings settle into our very framework.
What makes this collection special is its ability to move seamlessly between scales-from the five-billion-year lifespan of the sun to the jingle of charms on a bracelet, from Andromeda galaxy to a camping trip with a daughter. Pendill reminds us that wonder exists at every level, and that paying attention to the world around us-really seeing it-is itself a form of poetry.
Ever the Sky is perfect for readers who love contemporary poetry that blends the philosophical with the personal, the cosmic with the grounded. These are poems to return to, poems that reveal new layers with each reading, poems that remind us that even in our smallness, we are part of something magnificent.
