Even Barracudas Need a Home is the story of Bobby the Barracuda, who leaves his family and journeys to the edge of his world, the Caribbean Reef. He begins an unusual relationship with Gavin the Grouper, a fish that would normally be food for Bobby. Bobby and Gavin travel together and form an alliance with Christian, a blue crab, and Patsy, a pelican. The four friends work together to find Christian a new home in a split-level conch shell. The new friends learn how to rely on each other, how to take care of themselves, and how what they do affects their surroundings. The friends explore their community and learn how important they are to their environment. Even Barracudas Need a Home is a fun story written in engaging language. It draws in young readers and introduces them to the wild world of the Caribbean Reef and its unusual inhabitants. Author Robyn Kuhl creates a number of teachable moments for parents and caregivers to introduce the concepts of friendship and connectivity with the environment, and she presents opportunities within the text for parents and caregivers to open up dialogue about the action in the story
