Evan Harrington is a novel written by George Meredith. The story revolves around the life of Evan Harrington, a young man who is the son of a tailor. Evan dreams of achieving a higher social status and marrying into a wealthy family. He falls in love with a beautiful woman named Rose Jocelyn, who comes from a wealthy family. However, Rose's father disapproves of Evan's social status and forbids their marriage.Evan's father dies, leaving him with the family business, which he struggles to run. He also faces challenges in his personal life as he tries to win Rose's love and gain acceptance from her father. Along the way, Evan learns valuable lessons about love, social status, and the importance of being true to oneself. The novel is set in the mid-nineteenth century and offers a satirical commentary on the social hierarchy of the time. It explores themes of class, ambition, and the struggle for acceptance in a society that values wealth and status above all else.Overall, Evan Harrington is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that offers a glimpse into the social and cultural norms of Victorian England.
