Eustache Denis is a grieving father. His eldest son, Jacques, died for France on the 5th of October, 1918, during the final offensive in the Ardennes. Had he lived, Jacques would have followed in his father's footsteps and become a trimmings maker in Saint-Étienne. But on the 3rd of August 1914, on duty with the 86th Infantry Regiment in Le Puy-en-Velay, he was swept into the First World War. Eustache retraces his son's journey before visiting his grave in Monthois, near the place where Jacques fell just before his twenty-sixth birthday.
By questioning those who knew his son during the war, Eustache discovers that Jacques had not told him everything about his life in and out of the trenches, where Jacques had found comfort in the arms of a woman. With her, he could sometimes forget the war during the rare moments of respite it allowed.
