The Eustace Diamonds is a novel by Anthony Trollope that was first published in 1873. It tells the story of Lizzie Eustace, a young widow who inherits a valuable diamond necklace from her late husband. Lizzie is determined to keep the diamonds, despite the fact that they were a family heirloom and her husband's will stipulated that they be returned to his family. As Lizzie tries to hold on to the diamonds, she becomes embroiled in a web of deceit and manipulation. She is courted by two suitors, the wealthy Lord Fawn and the dashing Frank Greystock, and must navigate their competing interests while also trying to keep the diamonds out of the hands of her husband's family. Meanwhile, the novel also explores the lives of other characters, including Lizzie's cousin Lucy Morris, who is in love with Frank Greystock but faces obstacles to their relationship. The novel touches on themes of greed, love, and social status, and offers a portrait of Victorian society and its values. The Eustace Diamonds is part of Trollope's Palliser series, which follows the political and personal lives of a group of characters. While it can be read on its own, readers who are familiar with the other books in the series will recognize some of the characters and events that are referenced. Overall, The Eustace Diamonds is a compelling story of intrigue and romance that offers a glimpse into the world of Victorian England. The general belief which often seizes upon the world in regard to some special falsehood is very surprising. Everybody on a sudden adopts an idea that some particular man is over head and ears in debt, so that he can hardly leave his house for fear of the bailiffs--or that some ill-fated woman is cruelly ill-used by her husband--or that some eldest son has ruined his father; whereas the man doesn't owe a shilling, the woman never hears a harsh word from her lord. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
