Of the Preparation of Purity before the Blessed Sacrament. True Purity, according to the Saints of old, is nothing else than perfect integrity of the inner man, who avoids with all possible care whatever may insect him with the least stain; & that, not with the view of pleasing man, but with the hope of pleasing Almighty God alone, Who loves Purity above all things, because He Himself is infinitely Pure. From this it follows, that Purity is as pre-eminently needful to approach the Blessed Sacrament as is the Love of God. Of this Love, Purity is the fruit, the production, & the inseparable companion. Or, in other words, it is only the same thing under a different name, especially since one can be defined by the other, & we can say that Purity is nothing else but a jealous Love, iggreentg spefcttattom 181 which desiring to possess Almighty God, will not leave any other affection in the heart which may be unpleasing to Him. Therefore, on this point we must examine ourselves with the greatest care, as without this precaution affections, like so many idols in the heart, will escape us, which are hidden in the secret corners of our heart, make it an unpleasing abode for the Lord Jesus, & prevent Him from diffusing therein all the Blessings of His Grace.
