Five centuries. Ten acts. One continent that refuses to stay conquered.
From the arrival of the first ships to a near-future still being written, ETHNOGENESIS traces indigenous survival across Brazil not as a single unbroken story, but as history actually happens: fractured, contested, and carried forward by whoever manages to survive long enough to tell it.
There is no single hero here. Instead, ten acts, each set in its own era and written in the literary register that era would have used - chronicle, testimony, bureaucratic record, fragmented modern prose - trace how power, violence, and knowledge changed shape across five hundred years, while the peoples living through it never stopped adapting, absorbing, resisting, and remaking themselves.
This is not a story of victims waiting to be rescued, or of noble figures waiting to vanish. It is a story of strategy: alliances forged with old enemies, outsiders slowly folded into kinship networks, sacred knowledge deliberately withheld from the record, silence used as a weapon when speech no longer serves. Empires rise and reorganize themselves as paperwork. Massacres become statistics. And still, something persists - not loudly, not completely, but persists.
By the final act, the story has moved into a version of the present that hasn't fully happened yet, where the line between who is telling the story and who is living it begins to dissolve.
For readers of literary and historical fiction, mythic and fragmented narrative, and stories that refuse easy resolution: this is a book about what actually survives when a civilization insists it was the only possible one - and turns out to have been wrong.
