Buttercup the gnome can t believe her luck when she meets another gnome, Tommy the Toymaker, in the smog-ridden, factory city of Smokehatten in Fineland. That s because the goblins from Brushia have long run over the country and forced most of the gnomes to work long hours in their filthy factories.

After marrying, they finally get their chance to escape Fineland for good when they secretly meet the strange Elf-King of Toparia - but only if they and Tommy s uncle build a submarine to steal the River Fine Gold and finish building his fairytale castle in Tophatten.

This charmingly-told story is set in a fairytale version of nineteenth-century Germany, as well as being based on the real-life Dream King of Bavaria, who is famed for his building of Neuschwanstein Castle. As well as the gnomes, goblins and elves, there are also wolves, witches, fairies, pixies, wizards and even a kobold and a ferocious dragon all to be found on the dangerous journey to Tophatten Castle.

As with other Rabbit Warren children s books, the story finishes with a series of dramatic twists, as well as a few pearls of wisdom. Suitable for 7-120 year olds.
