mistake. Every wrong option in this book was built to catch one specific error,
and the worked solution names it - so the questions you get wrong teach you
more than the ones you get right.

Each paper is 27 questions in 40 minutes, matching the real module exactly,
and every question is written for a candidate with no calculator, because that
is the test you are going to sit.
- A named trap on every question. Not the answer is C but B is what
you get if you use the vertical height of the pyramid instead of the height of
a face. - A route line before the working. One sentence telling you how to see
the question, before the algebra starts - the thing a tutor says out loud that
textbooks leave out. - A Faster note wherever a shortcut exists. At 89 seconds a question
you cannot afford the long way round, and the shortcuts are written down
instead of assumed. - No single-step questions. The real paper has none. Books padded with
them leave you unprepared for the fusion questions that decide your score. - Option counts vary from four to eight within the same paper, exactly
as the real test does, so elimination and guessing will not carry you. - Thirty-four figures, drawn for print, plus a photocopiable answer
sheet so you can sit each paper properly and more than once. - Indexed by specification heading. Every question is mapped to one of
the seven Mathematics 1 content headings, M1 Units to M7 Probability, and a
table at the back shows you exactly which questions test which. When a paper
tells you your weak area, you can go straight to the rest of it.

There is not a single question here you can finish in one step, because there is
not one in the real paper either.
The most common way to walk into the ESAT under-prepared is to have practised
on questions that were easier than the real ones.
A short opening section covers what the ESAT actually is and how it is
scored, what the real paper feels like, the recurring question species, how
wrong answers are constructed, and how to triage forty minutes so you are not
still on question nine when the clock hits twenty.
Carl Morris has tutored since 2008 and holds an MChem from the University of
Oxford. He was Principal of a DfE-registered tutorial college in Oxford and is
Vice President of The Tutors' Association. Every question in this book
was used with students preparing for the real thing; four of them are now at
Cambridge or hold Oxford and Cambridge offers. These papers were written for his own
students first and used in real lessons before it became a book. Every question
is mapped to a heading in the published content specification, and every wrong
option in all 135 was written to catch a specific mistake rather than to fill a
line.
I had been getting questions right without knowing why, which turns out
to be the dangerous kind of right.
The shortcuts are the bit I use most. I was doing everything the long way
and running out of time.
