In wartime, friendship is a present from heaven.

As a child, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother. Her house was a gathering place for friends and family and there were often people around the big table that was always the center of her apartment. It always smelled of good, strong coffee and the laughter was always loud.

My grandmother, her sisters, her brother and her friends lived in Brussels and the Nazi occupation of the city and country during WWII. They were always ready to share their stories and memories. They did not embellish their stories, and their mischievous minds always remembered the most crisp and funniest situations they encountered as well as the difficult ones. I loved listening to these old stories - and never minded hearing them over and again. I hope you enjoy reading this story as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
