Erewhon: or, Over the Range (e-re-whon) is a novel by Samuel Butler which was first published anonymously in 1872. From a negative view of Darwin's theory of evolution, Butler creates in Erewhon a philosophical fantasy about a country located in a remote place of the world that represents an antithesis of the England of its time. Virtually all the social uses and customs of the Ewhonians are the opposites, the exact opposites of Victorian society: sickness, health, crime ... everything is conceived and treated in an antagonistic way, exposing the hypocrisy that Characterized and their social inconsistency. At the same time as a sample of travel literature and an adventure novel, Erewhon is a very special utopia that, situated on the frontier of the classic utopian genre and which begins in the twentieth century, has been considered as an antecedent of surrealism And the dystopic subgenus.
