In Asia, export-led industrialization, coupled with foreign direct investment has been proved as the most effective and powerful source of economic development. However, it has caused serious local, regional and trans-boundary environmental problems. Governments in Asia have implemented a variety of environmental policies to address domestic environmental degradation. However, stringency, pace and enforcement vary by countries. Policies have swung back and forth, reflecting a country's political, economic and social context, as well as effectiveness of the implemented policy instruments.
Environmental Policy in Asia highlights the development of environmental policies throughout the region and the environmental challenges that policymakers face in a time rapid economic growth amid globalization. Akihisa Mori then goes onto assess how effective these policies are for managing local, national and trans-boundary environmental challenges and how the policies reflect a tradeoff between regional and global environmental challenges and the governments own priorities.
