The City of Law vs. The City of the Wild The book establishes a vivid dichotomy between two rival centres of power. On the peninsula stood Durham Cathedral: a Fortress of Law defined by bureaucratic rigidity and the strict exclusion of women. Three miles downstream lay Finchale Priory: a Shadow Sanctuary and City of the Wild where the rules were suspended. McManus argues that the Cathedral needed the Hermitage to handle the spiritual excess-the women, the poor, and the desperate-that its own rigid system rejected.

Somatic Capital: The Currency of Pain Drawing on his background as a merchant, Godric understood that Grace was a commodity. Lacking the institutional authority of a Bishop, he generated his own Somatic Capital.
