The Mountebanks is a two-act comic opera that was written by William Schwenck Gilbert and originally published in 1892. The story follows two travelling salesmen, Giuseppe and Antonio, who pose as doctors and sell a fake cure-all elixir to unsuspecting townsfolk. However, their scheme is threatened when they encounter a real doctor, who is suspicious of their claims and begins to investigate their activities. As the plot unfolds, the characters engage in a series of humorous misunderstandings and mistaken identities, leading to a dramatic finale in which the truth about the mountebanks' deception is revealed. Along the way, the story is filled with witty dialogue, catchy songs, and colorful characters, including a love-struck young couple, a wealthy widow, and a bumbling police officer.Overall, The Mountebanks is a classic example of Gilbert's trademark wit and satire, and remains a beloved work of comic opera to this day. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
