What begins as an obscure investigation into forgotten VexSTARR technology takes a dangerous turn when Professor Dogmetal and his research team travel to Jerusalem to observe a surviving nineteenth-century harmonic resonance machine.
Shortly afterward, their vehicle is stopped near Abu Ghosh.
The team is detained. Their equipment is seized. Dogmetal is accused of stealing a highly restricted piece of experimental technology-but no evidence is presented.
Then Dogmetal is separated from the others.
He does not cross the border with them.
Stranded in Jordan and awaiting deportation, Stencil begins receiving fragments of something that should not be possible: corrupted messages appearing through Dogmetal's online accounts, physiological telemetry from his equipment, and a set of coordinates pointing back toward the hills west of Jerusalem.
One message is clear:
I HAVE ESCAPED. I'M STUCK.
Another contains only three words:

Convinced that Dogmetal is trying to lead him somewhere, Stencil turns to the research he left behind. What once seemed like disconnected curiosities begin to form a pattern-one that reaches back decades and points toward something hidden in the hills west of Jerusalem.
But the closer Stencil gets to the source of the transmissions, the less certain he becomes that Dogmetal is simply asking to be found.
Somewhere beneath the Holy Land, the signal is still transmitting.
