The interest in Edward Fitzgerald (to whom only a few near friends and fine scholars paid much homage in life-time) has for some while been so steadily growing among readers of taste that thanks are due to the publishers for this graceful reissue of some of his prose-pieces. But it is hard to suppress a regret that the half-crown copy of Omar's Rubaiyat was not followed by a half-crown copy of his charming letters: for it is on these two finished results that his fame must always rest. His rendering of Omar Khayam may be ranked by the side of Goethe's West-ostlicher Divan and above Bodenstedt's Hafiz: his letters are probably the best that have been written in the English tongue during the Victorian era. Perhaps the most notable fragments in this little volume are the Memoir of Barton (the Quaker Poet) and the Readings in Cr abbe. With regard to the dialogue Euphranor there may be more question; but it has never pleased me as much as most of the remains in the red three volume series in spite of its local colouring and quaint and peaceful passages.
