The Engineered Weakness takes that warning seriously without taking either man on faith. It is an investigation, not a prophecy: a careful, hard-hitting look at how the systems that shape modern life - the food environment, the attention economy, the machinery of outrage, the market that sells us belonging - came to do better when we are a little weaker.
The answer is not a conspiracy. It is worse, and harder to fix. You do not need a room full of plotters when a great many powerful institutions have each, independently, discovered that they benefit when you are more distractible, more anxious, more afraid, and more alone. No one had to coordinate it. Aligned incentives produce a coordinated-looking result on their own.
But this is not a book that leaves you in the dark. Its single discipline - kept visible on every page - is to mark the line between what can be proven, what can only be inferred, and what is merely suspected, and never to dress one up as another. And its second half turns the diagnosis into a practice: the same capacities these systems erode are the ones a person can deliberately rebuild.
This is a field guide to becoming difficult to addict, difficult to frighten, difficult to divide, and difficult to manage - for readers who are done with both establishment complacency and easy conspiracy, and who want substance, teeth, and honesty in the same book.
Awakening, as this book uses the word, means recovered self-government - not enlightenment, secret knowledge, or opting out of ordinary life.
