In the quiet stillness before dawn, the Church invites us into one of her most profound moments of prayer-the reading of the Six Psalms at Matins. This practice is central in Orthodox worship, providing a spiritual compass-reminding believers daily of their need for repentance, humility, gratitude, and divine guidance. They anchor the faithful in the foundational spiritual truths that orient the day toward God.
The Psalms are best prayed without analysis-slowly, attentively, and with a still mind-this book helps us reflect on the meaning of their words. This commentary is not offered as a substitute for prayer, nor as a method to master the Psalms intellectually, but as an aid to those who wish to pray them more deeply. Just as one may step back after prayer to consider what has been received, so allow this commentary to illuminate patterns, images, and themes that might otherwise pass unnoticed. Such reflection can help the words of the Psalms descend more readily from the mind into the heart. The hope is that greater understanding, offered humbly and sparingly, will clear the way for stillness, allowing the Psalms themselves to speak with greater clarity and resonance in the life of daily prayer.
Whether you are new to the prayer of the Church or seeking to deepen your spiritual life, this book may help you learn to encounter God in the stillness-and to carry that encounter into the whole of your life. Also from
