Marcolina Beltrán has been living in the small, rural town of BergantÃn with her parents since she was two. She is fascinated by everything in BergantÃn, but the thing that she is interested in more than anything else is Manuel, a nymph-like creature who is half-man, half-frog that lives on the Querecuál River near BergantÃn. Marcolina tells no one about Manuel, but her parents find out eventually and, mortified, flee BergantÃn and go to Barcelona. As time passes, Marcolina becomes lonely, but soon realizes that Manuel has followed her by swimming into another river. Upon seeing Manuel for the first time in years, she decides to jump into the Neverà river and join him in his underwater world. But what Marcolina never realizes is that Manuel has enchanted her by making her fall in love with him without realizing it.
