A rare 18th century violin made by the famous Scottish luthier, Matthew Hardie is discovered in an abandoned sea captain's chest. It is restored and played by the hero who is a fair fiddler. Several days later at midnight he is awakened by the strains of melancholy violin music. He thinks the radio has been left on, but is terrified to see the violin apparently being played by a invisible ghost. The nightly concerts continue, revealing clues that point to the spirit likely being Robbie Burns; the famed 18th century poet and writer. All of the pieces are compositions of Burns. The hero attempts to communicate with the spirit by joining in violin duets, especially playing the specific tunes which had been written as dedication to Highland Mary. His wife also sings the lyrics. They determine that the first contact with the Spirit was on the 250th anniversary of the tragic early death of his beloved Highland Mary Campbell. With the assistance of a Medium they make contact with his spirit and are asked to participate in a complex spell to try to free Burns from the spirit world and reunite him with his lost love. Adventures-some frightening and some heartwarming- follow.
