Eminent Actors: Thomas Betterton by Robert W. Lowe is a book that explores the life and career of one of the most celebrated actors of the Restoration era in England. Thomas Betterton was a prominent figure in the theater scene of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and this book offers a detailed account of his rise to fame, his notable performances, and his lasting impact on the theatrical world. The book begins with a brief overview of Betterton's early life and training, before delving into his early career as an actor and his eventual rise to stardom. The author provides a comprehensive analysis of Betterton's acting style, his approach to character development, and his interactions with fellow actors and playwrights of the time. The book also explores Betterton's personal life, including his marriage to actress Mary Saunderson, and his relationships with other notable figures of the era, such as the playwright William Congreve and the actor-manager Colley Cibber.Throughout the book, the author draws on a wide range of primary sources, including contemporary accounts of Betterton's performances, letters and diaries from the period, and critical reviews of his work. The result is a richly detailed portrait of one of the most important actors of his time, and a fascinating glimpse into the world of Restoration theater. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
