In the fog-laced borough of Chiswick, where the Thames murmurs secrets and chimney smoke curls like question marks, Elizabeth lives alone-or so it seems.
Strange disturbances creep into her days: tufts of fur appear on her pillow, sardines vanish without a trace, and teacups tremble at dawn. Ghostly purrs echo through her home. Locals chuckle over their ales, blaming age or too much Sauvignon Blanc with its curious cat-pee bouquet. But Elizabeth suspects otherwise.
One silvery night, drawn by a whisper from the attic, she discovers a cracked mirror shimmering with hidden light. Peering through its fractured glass, she sees the impossible: a secret society of invisible cats-graceful, mischievous, and omnipresent-dancing on rooftops, threading through the fog, and orchestrating small absurdities across the borough. Foxes begin leaping into the Thames in entranced surrender, sardines lead aquatic parades beneath pub floors, and men vomit furballs at first bell.
What begins as a mystery becomes a metamorphosis. Elizabeth slips into their world, a dreamscape stitched with nonsense logic and feline riddles. There are cats who exist only in reflections, others made of mist, and one who hums Bach in Morse code.
As she drifts deeper into this surreal communion-part séance, part bedtime story-Elizabeth becomes more than a witness. She is initiated. At the river's curl, with fog thick and moonlight bent, she raises a final toast:
To whisker-winks and cat-pee wine.
And in the dark above, the invisible cats grin down from the stars.
