Keepers of the House is a series of poems about teaching English in a public high school, and how a school can be a home for students and their teacher. Written by a veteran educator, working with a diverse population that ranges from underprivileged students, recent immigrants and refugees, to the children of working class and middle class families, it draws on positive and challenging experiences, addressing topics from the serious: school shootings, the opioid crisis, to the everyday task of caring for young people, trying to connect them to literature, and engaging them in the goal of becoming citizens.
