And a girl named Clara, who keeps her father's harbor ledger and leaves Elias a sentence he will carry all his life: Someone has to see what the men will say never happened.
This is a novel about learning to look. About a boy who cannot run, and so notices what the running boys miss - a hesitation before an answer, a word that travels farther than the man who sent it, a line in a logbook that is accurate and still does not tell the truth.
And it is a novel about what gets written down. At Blackstone Point there are two books. An official log, which records what happened and has no column for why. And a journal, left behind by a keeper no one in the house ever met - out of which a whole family has quietly built a man to remember.
The Years of the Light ends on the evening a third book is opened. It is gray, it is thin, and an eight-year-old boy is keeping it. He has already worked out the hardest part: writing does not mean saving everything. It means carrying responsibility for what you can save only partly. For what you make smaller. For what you make larger. And for what you leave in silence, when you do not yet know whether the silence serves mercy or fear.
Book One of two. Elias Thorne is one novel published in two volumes, with continuous chapter numbering. Book One holds Chapters 1-16. Book Two, The Last Light, continues with Chapters 17-32.
