Discover the hidden history of a quaint New York town that birthed the American circus in *The Elephant Town* by R.S. Wagner. Nestled in Westchester County, Somers appears as a peaceful suburb-but its roots run deep into the world of wonder and spectacle. Follow the remarkable story of Hachaliah Bailey, a visionary farmer who purchased an exotic elephant named Old Bet in the early 1800s, sparking a revolution in entertainment that evolved into the iconic Barnum & Bailey Circus and beyond. From Old Bet's tragic fate and her lasting legacy to the surprising connections between historic menageries, IBM's modern tech campuses, and land deals shaping the Hudson Valley, this engaging narrative uncovers layers of innovation, resilience, and cultural transformation. Blending local folklore, historical facts, and tales of entrepreneurial spirit, *The Elephant Town* reveals how a single elephant forever changed American show business and community life. Perfect for history enthusiasts, circus lovers, New York locals, and anyone fascinated by the untold stories behind everyday places. This concise, illustrated exploration (43 pages) transports readers through time, from 19th-century traveling shows to 21st-century corporate shifts, celebrating Somers as a beacon of the American dream.
