In Elegant Anarchy, playwright and attorney Brian S. Brijbag proposes a new framework for understanding contemporary absurdist drama. Drawing on both theatre scholarship and original dramatic works, the book argues that the central concerns of absurdism have not disappeared. They have evolved.
Where classical absurdism often approached meaning through silence, depletion, and fragmentation, Elegant Anarchy identifies a contemporary theatrical mode built on saturation, over-articulation, and the failure of language to fully explain human experience. Through close analysis of six original plays and engagement with major absurdist thinkers and dramatists, Brijbag develops a practitioner-centered theory organized around five dramatic operations: the High Floor, the Slip, the Administered Sublime, the Witness Function, and the Adjustment.
