It didn't begin for any particular reason-just a spark of imagination. What if there were a lounge café floating in the open space between twin towers, slowly revolving like an elevator as it ascends and descends? Imagine sipping coffee, listening to music, admiring curated interior design, while watching the ever-changing cityscape unfold like a panoramic movie. A whimsical idea, but how many birds can you catch with one stone?
The concept began as The Elevator Café, then shortened to El Café. Later, the name evolved into Eclafé, a playful blend of El and Café. Eventually, the final name emerged: El DoraDo.
The name holds layers of meaning.
El stands for Elevator.
Dora means to rotate in Korean.
Do (島) means island in Chinese characters.
Thus, El DoraDo is a rotating island café in the sky, reached by a bridge and suspended between twin towers. The name also recalls the legendary El Dorado, the golden utopia-reflecting the dreamlike nature of the project. And since El already means The in Spanish, we simply call it El DoraDo-no article needed.
Structurally, El DoraDo takes the form of a flying saucer with transparent walls all around, maximizing the view. Suspended between two skyscrapers, it moves vertically and rotates, offering an ever-changing experience. The space between twin towers is often unused, making it ideal in terms of both space and cost. The towers provide structural support and power for the system's movement and energy needs.
Rather than retrofitting existing buildings, it's more practical to collaborate with developers planning new twin or triple towers. That way, El DoraDo can be designed from the beginning as part of the architectural blueprint.
This book tells the story of imagining, designing, and operating El DoraDo in this context. In our model, it is supported by 50-story towers, and powered through infrastructure connected to them. You board El DoraDo from a shopping mall at the base-before it departs from the mother ship. But boarding mid-air? That's possible too.
Let's say El DoraDo is revolving at the 40th floor. Visitors first take a regular elevator to the nearest level. These elevators have glass walls facing El DoraDo, so you can see if it's docked nearby. Once aligned, a transit lift takes you from the elevator to a bridge connected to the outer non-rotating ring of El DoraDo. You cross the bridge and step into a futuristic space in motion.
To ensure safety while revolving, El DoraDo has a dual-deck structure: an inner ring that revolves, and an outer ring that remains stationary-just as shown on the cover.
So why build El DoraDo?
Because imagination has no limits. And sometimes, the most surreal dreams are just one structure away from reality.
