A proposed walk of 620 kilometres is a challenge but this is the story of walking the pilgrim's route from Lisbon northwards to reach Santiago de Compostela, where St James' body was interred. It was a Medieval pilgrimage destination with the same status as other destinations such as Rome and Jerusalem.

The route weaves its way through scenic undulating farmland, through forests and mountains. The route passes through historic cities with many sites to visit. There are interactions with other trekkers, some doing the route for religious reasons and others for the challenge of a long-distance trail.

Whilst it was a route through some spectacular Portuguese scenery, it was also a route through some of Portugal's turbulent history and its influence in the Scramble for Africa, the dark days of the European colonisation of civilisations across the world and especially in Africa often against their will and the Portuguese jostling with other colonial powers. Where does this leave Portugal today?
