Months after the fall of the Inquisitorial Order, Martin Pryce has finally returned to the quiet life he fought to reclaim. Back in Briar Glen, he spends his days working as a carpenter, building a future with Elena and teaching his young apprentice, Daniel. Theron Veyr-the feared man Martin once was-is part of a past he has finally begun to accept without allowing it to define him. For the first time in years, peace seems possible.
But destroying the Order's reservoirs and returning countless stolen memories to their rightful owners has created an unforeseen consequence.
Across the former empire, people begin experiencing memories that aren't their own. Children remember lives lived centuries before their births. Strangers recognize families they have never met. Some awaken speaking forgotten languages or mourning people who died generations ago. The phenomenon becomes known as the Echoes, and when Daniel begins remembering an ancient city called Veyr-a city that according to every surviving record never existed-Martin realizes the mystery may be connected to his forgotten past.
Drawn away from Briar Glen once again, Martin, Elena, and Daniel join Arthur Vance at the newly established Haven of Reclamation, where scholar Dr. Lyra Senn has been investigating the spreading Echoes. Their search uncovers a terrifying truth: the Veil was never simply a place where memories disappeared. For thousands of years, it has been collecting humanity's sacrificed experiences, allowing billions of fragments of love, grief, fear, joy, and death to mingle until they formed something entirely new-a consciousness known as the Remembrance.
Martin soon discovers that Theron knew of the Remembrance long before the fall of the Order and may have erased himself not merely to escape his own terrible history, but to prevent something within the Veil from finding its way into the world.
Meanwhile, Silas Orr, a grieving former priest whose stolen memories of his wife and daughter have finally returned, believes the Remembrance offers humanity something miraculous: an end to true loss. If all memories could be joined together, no loved one would ever completely disappear and no life would ever truly be forgotten. Determined to open the Veil fully, Silas gathers followers who share his belief, forcing Martin to confront an enemy driven not by cruelty or power, but by love and an inability to let go.
As the boundary between memory and identity begins to collapse, Martin faces his greatest temptation yet. The Remembrance can return everything Theron sacrificed-his childhood, his family, his loves, his failures, and every missing piece of the man he once was. But accepting them may mean surrendering Martin Pryce entirely.
To save Daniel and prevent humanity from becoming trapped within its own past, Martin must decide what truly makes a person who they are: the memories they carry, the things they have lost, or the choices they make about who they will become.
