In the summer of 1969, Tom Briggs wades into the Escanaba River one last time before shipping out to Vietnam. He carries his father's folding knife, his father's instruction - pay attention - and very little else.

In the barracks at Fort Benning, he meets Danny Reyes: a cook from San Antonio who talks to photographs of his family, plans a restaurant he intends to open when the war is over, and teaches Tom that a friendship can be built out of carnitas recipes, bad harmonica music, and the specific patience required to wait for something you love.

What follows is a novel about what happens after.

Tom comes home from Vietnam carrying something he cannot name and cannot put down. He builds a life - a job at the paper mill, a marriage, two daughters who learn to read his silences - but for seventeen years he carries it. Until the winter day he drives alone to Washington, D.C., to find a name etched into black granite, and finally touches it.

Echoes of the Living is a novel about war, but more essentially about time.
