We have been given more than a promise. We have been given an earnest - a deposit, already paid, guaranteeing that everything still to come is certain.
Earnest of Glory is the third and closing volume in a trilogy on discipleship, walking the reader from who the Holy Spirit is, to His baptism and its benefits, to the gifts He gives every believer to serve their calling, and finally to the fruit, leading, and communion that make up an ordinary Spirit-led life.
Written by a non-denominational follower of Jesus, this book affirms the present-day work of the Holy Spirit plainly and without apology - His baptism, His gifts, His leading, His power - while staying gracious toward every tradition that reads Scripture differently on these questions. To many readers these emphases will read as Pentecostal, and that is a fair way to describe them; the author would put it more simply: he does not follow a denomination or a system, but Jesus. Each of the twenty-eight chapters follows the same rhythm: a real question drawn from ordinary life, a biblical truth handled deeply rather than skimmed across many verses, a concrete application for the week ahead, reflection questions suited to both personal devotion and small-group discussion, and a closing prayer that turns understanding into response.
Inside, you will walk through:
- Who the Holy Spirit actually is - a Person, fully God, not a force to be used
- The baptism of the Spirit, and the benefits Scripture promises it produces
- The five callings and the specific gifts of the Spirit given to walk each one out, illustrated through figures like Florence Nightingale, George Müller, Charles Spurgeon, and David Wilkerson
- The fruit of the Spirit, made concrete in the ordinary textures of marriage, work, and daily temptation
- How to recognise His leading, pray in step with Him, and test what claims to be from Him
- The closing picture that gives the book its title: the Spirit Himself as the guarantee, the earnest, of the inheritance still to come
This is not a book about religious performance. It is an invitation to know the Spirit who has already been given, and to keep asking, seeking, and knocking - not because He is distant, but because He is close, and we were made to stay close to Him.
Whether read alone or worked through with a small group, Earnest of Glory closes the trilogy that began with From Egypt to Inheritance and continued through The Four Pillars, completing a picture of the Father, Son, and Spirit for the whole household of faith.
